It has always been a tradition for the annual Christmas party to be held at the Azucena-Valdiviezo residence. Each family brings a dish, names are drawn for the manito/manita gift exchange, and everyone takes part in parlor games with prizes.

More than a yearly tradition, this event reunites people who havenât seen each other in ages, though it always feels like yesterday when we do. Honestly, Iâd give anything to be teased again about not getting any giftsâjust because everyone forgot. I must be getting older, though, because the loud music irritates me now.

This year feels a little different for me, though only my immediate family and I know why. I thought it might feel strange, but it doesnât. Being surrounded by their warmth has reminded me that life is still worth living.
