Traditions, Devotions, & Processions

NEW YEAR TRADITION. Thousands of devotees gathered at the famous Vito Church for the first Friday Mass of the new year.

I think I need to join more family traditions this year, as much as my limited time at home allows.

One of these traditions is the journey—three hours away from home—to attend the first Friday Mass of the year at the San Vicente Ferrer Parish Shrine, widely known as Vito Church, in Sagay City.

I woke up at 1:00 a.m. and was already ready by 1:30 a.m. for the trip. I ended up being way too early because I misunderstood my father when he said to be ready at 2—LOL.

It was a rainy morning, and I was honestly expecting fewer people, so I was surprised to see hundreds already surrounding the parish by 5:00 a.m.

Car traffic was also heavier than I expected. There were no seats available for us, but thankfully my cousin had brought foldable lawn chairs.

It was a new experience—one that truly opened my mind to the power of devotion and faith. People from different walks of life gathered to pray for a fruitful and meaningful year ahead.

The parish priest said this tradition has always been a great equalizer—there are no managers, drivers, supervisors, CEOs, or business owners, because titles do not matter when you are face to face with the Lord. I completely agree

I guess I’ll be joining again next year.
